Dog-Friendly Breckenridge & Summit County: Trails, Patios, Lodging & Services
Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne at 9,000 feet and up, where the leash rule changes at the town line and dogs ride the gondola for free.
Breckenridge sits at 9,728 feet, and in Summit County leash rules change at the town line. Inside Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne, dogs must be leashed, and the Rec Path requires a leash its whole length. Outside town limits, on unincorporated county and White River National Forest land, voice control is allowed if the dog responds and stays within 10 feet. The county studied a six-foot leash rule in 2024; we could not confirm the outcome, so check the county's current page. Dogs are banned from Cucumber Gulch Preserve below the gondola, the golf course, Kingdom Park fields and the Riverwalk Center lawn.
Licensing is split. Summit County, through DocuPet, licenses dogs in unincorporated areas and in Blue River, Dillon, Keystone and Silverthorne ($15 a year altered); Breckenridge handles its own licensing through Community Service Officers, with details we could not confirm. Summit Stage and the Breckenridge Free Ride both allow licensed, leashed, well-behaved dogs on the floor beside you, not on seats.
Signature outings: the free, pet-friendly BreckConnect Gondola to Peaks 7 and 8; the Frisco Peninsula Recreation Area trails on Dillon Reservoir, where Frisco enforces its leash law; and the fenced Carter Park Dog Park at the south end of High Street. Broken Compass Brewing allows leashed dogs in both taprooms, Blue Moose Restaurant seats dogs on its patio, and Beaver Run Resort takes dogs by advance reservation at $40 a night for the first dog. High-country routes are on trails near Breckenridge.
