Lily Pad Lake is the gentle Summit County lake hike: about 1.7 miles each way from the Ryan Gulch trailhead above Wildernest through lodgepole and meadow to a shallow lake covered in lily pads, with Buffalo Mountain looming behind. The grade is easy and the shade is constant, which makes it a good first high-altitude hike for a dog. Because the trail enters the Eagles Nest Wilderness, the Forest Service's leash order applies the whole way, and rangers do check. Moose are common in the willows and are aggressive toward dogs; that is the other reason for the leash. Mosquitoes are ferocious in July.
