Dog-Friendly Aurora: Trails, Patios, Parks & Services
Aurora holds the metro area's largest off-leash area inside a state park, allows a longer leash than its neighbors and ended its pit bull ban in 2024.
Two numbers define dog life in Aurora: ten and three. Ten is the maximum leash length, in feet, under city code Chapter 14, which covers any dog off its owner's property. Three is the daily cost, in dollars, of the Dog Off-Leash Pass at Cherry Creek State Park, the metro's biggest off-leash ground. The pass ($25 annual) covers a handler and up to three dogs, is charged on top of vehicle entry, and applies only inside the designated area, which has creek access, coyotes and rattlesnakes.
The city runs three off-leash areas of its own: Grandview Dog Park (5.7 acres on East Quincy), the fenced area inside Bicentennial Park on East Alameda, and Singletree Park up north. Everywhere else in Aurora parks and on trails the leash rule applies; fines are not published on the city's dog-basics page, so check the city's current page.
Licenses are required for dogs and cats over six months: $15 for one year or $41 for three altered, $53 and $156 intact, through the Aurora Animal Shelter or online. The 2005 pit bull ban is gone; voters approved Measure 3A in November 2024, though dangerous-animal rules still apply to every breed. RTD takes only small pets in carriers. July averages 89°F, so walk early and see trails near Aurora. For a patio, Stanley Marketplace's posted policy allows dogs outdoors at Stanley Beer Hall but not in the indoor common areas, and Launch Pad Brewery lets leashed dogs into the taproom.

Questions people ask
Is Cherry Creek State Park's off-leash area in Aurora or Denver?
Aurora. The entrance is at 4201 S Parker Rd, inside Aurora city limits, though most visitors come from Denver. You need a Colorado Parks & Wildlife vehicle pass plus a Dog Off-Leash Pass ($3 daily or $25 annual, handler and up to three dogs), and dogs must be leashed in every other part of the park.
How long can my dog's leash be in Aurora?
Up to 10 feet. Aurora's code requires any dog off its owner's property to be on a leash no longer than 10 feet, held by a person physically able to control the dog. That is longer than Littleton and South Suburban's six-foot limit and matches Jefferson County Open Space's 10-foot rule.
Are pit bulls allowed in Aurora now?
Yes. Aurora voters approved Measure 3A on November 5, 2024, ending the ban that dated to 2005 (a 2021 council repeal had been voided in court). Pit bulls are licensed like any other dog, and Aurora's general dangerous-animal ordinances still apply regardless of breed.
