Dogs on this trail

Dogs are allowed on the Quandary Peak Trail and ride the Breckenridge shuttle free; it lies outside the Eagles Nest Wilderness leash order, so Summit County's immediate-control-or-leash standard applies and dogs should stay on trail above treeline.

Quandary is Colorado's most-climbed 14er and the one most people take a dog up: 3.1 miles and 3,300 feet each way on a clear Class 1 trail from forest to a long, rocky east ridge. That ridge is the thing to think about for a dog. Talus above 13,000 feet shreds pads (boots help), there is no water after the first mile, and the resident mountain goats will stand their ground. Summit County runs a summer reservation-and-shuttle system; dogs ride free. Start by 5 a.m. to beat storms, turn around when the dog slows, and remember that Quandary is a very different animal in snow.
