McCullough Gulch climbs an old mining road, then rougher trail, 2.5 miles up a glacial valley on the north side of Quandary Peak to a waterfall and an alpine lake at 12,000 feet. It is the best water hike in Summit County for dogs: creek crossings, cascades and a cold lake at the top. The catch is access. In summer the only way in is the paid Quandary parking reservation or the Breckenridge shuttle, with a connector shuttle up the gulch road. Dogs ride free. Mountain goats frequent the upper basin and will not back down, so leash up above treeline. Afternoon storms arrive early; start by 7 a.m.
