Dog-Friendly Hikes near Breckenridge, CO

Summit County's dog rules change at the town line and again at the wilderness boundary, and in summer the harder problem is parking.

Three rules in one county. Inside Breckenridge town limits any dog off its owner's property is on a leash of six feet or less, including on the Recpath, and dogs are prohibited at Cucumber Gulch, the Riverwalk Center lawn, Kingdom Park fields and the golf course. On county open space and National Forest outside wilderness, the standard is immediate control or a leash, which is what applies on Sapphire Point, McCullough Gulch and Quandary Peak. Inside the Eagles Nest Wilderness a Forest Service order requires a leash under six feet, so Lily Pad Lake is leash-only and rangers check.

From mid-June to mid-September, Quandary and McCullough Gulch are reached only by a paid parking reservation or the $7 round-trip shuttle from the Breckenridge South Gondola garage; dogs ride free. Sapphire Point's small lot fills on summer afternoons and at sunset; the Ryan Gulch lot for Lily Pad fills on summer weekends.

The high trails run late June to September; Quandary in snow is avalanche terrain. Start before dawn for lightning, leash up above treeline for the mountain goats, and expect moose in the willows at Lily Pad.

Leash rules come from each land manager's published regulations on the date shown on the trail page. Rules change seasonally; check before you go.

Hiking with dogs near Breckenridge & Summit County: FAQ

Can I take my dog up Quandary Peak?

Yes. Dogs are allowed on the Quandary Peak Trail under Summit County's immediate-control-or-leash standard and ride the Breckenridge shuttle free. The east ridge is 3.1 miles and about 3,300 feet each way with talus above 13,000 feet that is hard on pads, no water after the first mile, and resident mountain goats that will not move.

Where are dogs banned in Breckenridge?

The town prohibits animals at Cucumber Gulch Preserve, the Riverwalk Center lawn, the Kingdom Park fields and the golf course. Everywhere else inside town limits, including the Recpath, dogs must be on a leash of six feet or less. Carter Park has the town's fenced off-leash dog park.

Do I need a leash on Summit County Forest Service trails?

It depends on the wilderness boundary. Inside the Eagles Nest Wilderness, which includes Lily Pad Lake and Buffalo Mountain, a Forest Service order requires a leash under six feet. Outside wilderness, on trails such as Sapphire Point, McCullough Gulch and Quandary, Summit County's rule is immediate control or a leash.
