Breweries With Off-Leash Dog Yards: The Short List and the Runners-Up
Search for "dog-friendly brewery" and you get patios. A brewery with an actual fenced, off-leash play area is a different and much rarer thing, because state and local food rules make it awkward to run one. Of the breweries in our directory, exactly one has built a real off-leash pen. This guide names it, explains the rules that keep the list short, and lists the beer gardens and brewery-plus-dog-park pairings that come closest.
The one with a real off-leash yard
Coal Mine Ave Brewing Company, Littleton
Coal Mine Ave Brewing in southwest Littleton is built around a 2,500-square-foot off-leash dog play area. The rules are posted and specific: register your dog once before the first visit and show proof of rabies vaccination, no puppies under four months, no glass and no kids under 13 inside the pen, pick up after your dog, and non-paying visitors owe $5 per dog per hour. Dogs are not allowed inside the taproom itself apart from service animals; a separate on-leash patio handles shy or tired dogs. The brewery itself says the pen gets crowded and may not suit dogs that dislike tight quarters. There is no kitchen, so food trucks cover meals. It pairs naturally with the Chatfield State Park off-leash area or the Two Brands Trail at Hildebrand Ranch earlier in the day.
Why there are not more. Colorado's Retail Food Establishment Rules (6 CCR 1010-2) follow the FDA Food Code, which bars live animals from food establishments except service animals. Since 2019, a statewide variance lets non-service dogs onto patios when the local public health agency approves, with conditions: dogs stay out of the interior, the patio has its own entrance, waste supplies are on hand, staff do not touch the dogs, and surfaces are cleanable. Denver's rules go further: the patio must be unroofed with direct access from the street, patios under 400 square feet get no table service, larger ones must keep half the space dog-free, dogs stay 15 feet from any outdoor service station and never on seats. A taproom that serves no food beyond packaged snacks has more latitude, which is why the breweries that allow dogs inside are often the ones without a kitchen. Boulder's Upslope stopped allowing dogs inside after a health department ruling. None of this makes an off-leash pen impossible, but it makes it a project.
Runner-up: breweries next to an off-leash area
The practical alternative is a legal off-leash run first and a leashed patio second. These pairings are all within a short walk or drive of each other, with policies taken from the breweries' own sites.
- Woods Boss Brewing, Denver. The brewery built an outdoor patio with picnic tables plus a dedicated dog parklet on California Street, and it is a short walk from the Sonny Lawson off-leash park. Leashed on the parklet; it is not a pen.
- Living the Dream, Sterling Ranch taproom, Littleton. Patio only for dogs at this location (the Highlands Ranch brewery allows them inside), and a short drive from Chatfield's off-leash area.
- LUKI Brewery, Arvada. Pet friendly inside and out per the brewery's own page, a few minutes east of the ten-acre West Arvada Dog Park, which requires a current dog license. The Fairmount Trail to North Table Mountain starts nearby if you want a leashed hike instead.
- Denver Beer Co., Platte Street, Denver. Dog-friendly patio, close to the city park loops and the Railyard dog park under the Millennium Bridge.
Runner-up: beer gardens with room to sprawl
Not off leash, but big enough that a leashed dog can lie down without being stepped on. Policies as the breweries state them:
| Brewery | City | Posted dog policy |
|---|---|---|
| New Terrain Brewing | Golden | Large outdoor beer garden; dogs on a 4-foot lead at your table, inside only while ordering or closing a tab, and a three-barks-you're-out rule. |
| Mountain Toad Brewing | Golden | Leashed, well-behaved dogs welcome in the beer garden; they may come inside to order. |
| Ska Brewing World Headquarters | Durango | Dogs welcome in the outdoor beer garden on a leash and with their humans. |
| Cerberus Brewing | Colorado Springs | Patio, beer garden and dining tent are all dog-friendly seating; the kitchen makes a dog menu item. |
| Avery Brewing | Boulder | Outdoor beer garden and patio described as dog-friendly; dogs stay outside. |
| Strange Craft Beer Company | Denver | Invites guests to bring dogs to the outdoor biergarten. |
| Bruz Off Fax | Denver | Dogs welcome at both taprooms including the patios, with water and treats provided. |
Where a listing in our directory says "call ahead," it means the business has not published a policy and we are not going to guess for them.
Taproom manners that keep the policy alive
Several of the policies above exist because owners earned them, and a few, like Upslope's, were lost. The common asks: a short leash clipped to you or the table (Lost Friend in Colorado Springs puts carabiners on the tables for this), dogs off the furniture and out of walkways, no barking streaks, and clean up immediately. A dog that cannot settle in a crowd is happier at daycare for the afternoon, and persistent barking around other dogs is a solvable problem with a trainer.
