Hildebrand Ranch is the easy neighbor to Deer Creek Canyon: a nearly five-mile loop built around the wide, gently graded Two Brands Trail that runs along the base of the Dakota hogback with the plains on one side and the foothills on the other. It is an honest walking trail rather than a climb, so it suits seniors, puppies and dogs recovering from something. Shade is scarce, and the hogback radiates heat by late morning in July. Leashes (10 feet or less) are the Jeffco rule. The Black Bear Trail connection to Deer Creek Canyon is closed Feb. 1 to July 31 for wildlife.
