Chatfield's off-leash area is the south metro's answer to Cherry Creek: roughly 2.3 miles of trail looping through cottonwoods, gravel ponds and a braided stretch of the South Platte where dogs can swim. It is unfenced on the water side and shared with anglers and dog trainers, so recall matters. CPW requires the off-leash pass in addition to park entry and keeps the leash rule everywhere else in the park, including the campground and the 11.5-mile perimeter trail. Mud is epic in spring; bring towels. For a leashed alternative, the paved Chatfield Dam Trail gives a 2.25-mile overlook walk.
