Dog Parks in Boulder

Boulder runs three fenced dog parks and one off-leash area that requires the city's Voice and Sight tag, and the difference matters.

Valmont Dog Park, on the north side of Valmont Road east of Foothills Parkway, is the largest: about three acres for large dogs and a quarter acre for small ones, with a seasonal water spigot. East Boulder Dog Park, beside the community center and pond off Sioux Drive, splits into roughly 1.5 acres and 0.45 acre. Foothills Dog Park at the top of Cherry Avenue in north Boulder covers about 1.6 acres plus a half-acre small-dog section, and it opens directly onto Open Space and Mountain Parks trails.

Howard Heuston at 34th and Iris is not a fenced dog park. Its 1.25-acre area north of a partial fence is off-leash only for dogs wearing a City of Boulder Voice and Sight tag, and leashes are required in the rest of the park.

Leash law (B.R.C. 6-1-16) applies as you approach and leave every one of these parks. City residents need a Boulder dog license, $15 a year for an altered dog, and must hold one before buying a Voice and Sight tag, which costs $13 for city residents, $33 for county residents and $75 for visitors from outside Boulder County.

Questions about dog parks in Boulder

What is the difference between a Boulder dog park and an off-leash area?

Valmont, East Boulder and Foothills are fenced dog parks open to any dog under city rules. Howard Heuston is an off-leash area: unfenced on one side, limited to the 1.25 acres north of the partial fence, and open only to dogs displaying a City of Boulder Voice and Sight tag.

Which Boulder dog park has a separate small-dog area?

All three fenced parks do. Valmont has about a quarter acre for small dogs beside its three-acre main area, East Boulder has roughly 0.45 acre next to 1.5 acres, and Foothills offers about half an acre alongside 1.6 acres for large dogs.

Do I need a license to use Boulder's dog parks?

Boulder requires a license for all dogs living in the city, $15 a year altered or $30 intact, renewed by December 31. City residents must hold a license before buying a Voice and Sight tag, which Howard Heuston requires. Visitors should expect leash law to apply right up to the gate.
