Restaurants and bars with patios that take dogs, from Denver and Boulder to Breckenridge and Durango. Each listing says patio or inside, leash expectations and whether the restaurant itself confirmed it.

AI illustration, not a specific place.
Colorado restaurants follow the state Retail Food Establishment Rules (6 CCR 1010-2), which bar live animals except service animals and allow pet dogs only in an outdoor dining area the local health authority has approved. Since 2019, CDPHE's variance criteria give every county health department the same checklist: a patio entrance so dogs never cross the dining room, waste bags and a covered bin, staff who do not handle the dogs, surfaces that are easy to clean. Approval is per restaurant, which is why one patio on a block welcomes dogs and the next does not.
Denver's version (Denver Retail Food Establishment Rules §8-106(D)) explains much of what you notice when you sit down. Dogs are allowed only on an unroofed, unscreened patio reached by a gate from the sidewalk. Under 400 square feet, employees cannot bring food to your table, so you order at the counter; larger patios offer table service only when at least half the space is a signed, separately gated dog-free section. No tableware is preset, dogs stay on the floor and 15 feet from outdoor service stations, and the table is sanitised after each party with a dog. Dogs must be leashed and wearing current vaccination tags. Expect similar signage in Boulder, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs even where the wording differs.
A few places go further than the rules require. Lazy Dog at Southlands in Aurora keeps a dog menu and water bowls on the patio; Pub Dog in Colorado Springs is built as a bar with its own indoor and outdoor dog park, a different licensing setup from the normal patio exception. Most confirmed listings are patio only, with only service dogs inside. When a restaurant's own site posts no policy, the card says call ahead.

Every card states its dog policy and whether a primary source confirmed it; unconfirmed listings say "call ahead". Businesses marked "Featured" pay a fee for placement. Payment does not affect what a listing says about its dog policy, and we do not rank Featured listings by quality. Add or correct a listing.
Taprooms have slightly looser rules when they serve no food; see dog-friendly breweries. For hot-weather patio days, read about cooling vests for Front Range summers.
Not as a pet. State food rules keep animals out of the interior of a restaurant except trained service dogs. The exception is for approved outdoor dining areas, so dog-friendly means patio unless a listing specifically says indoor ok, which in this category is rare and usually means a venue licensed differently, such as a bar with a dog park attached.
In Denver, a dog patio under 400 square feet is counter-service only under the city's food rules; larger patios get table service only if half the space is dog-free. Other counties use the CDPHE variance conditions, which also separate dog areas from food handling. If a host asks you to order at the bar, that is the rule, not the staff.
A short leash, current rabies and license tags on the collar, your own water bowl in case the restaurant does not provide one, and a mat if the patio is concrete in summer. Dogs must stay on the floor and off chairs. Pick a shaded table on hot days and check the pavement with your hand first.
No. Under the ADA and Colorado's public-accommodation law only a dog individually trained to perform a task for a person with a disability counts as a service animal. Emotional-support animals are pets for restaurant purposes, so they are limited to approved patios like any other dog.
