Dog-Friendly Hikes near Littleton, CO

South metro dogs get a swimmable off-leash area at Chatfield and two Jefferson County foothills parks within ten minutes of each other.

In town, the City of Littleton and South Suburban Parks both cap the leash at six feet outside designated dog parks. The two foothills parks are Jefferson County Open Space, where the leash is 10 feet or less and rangers write $75 tickets: Deer Creek Canyon, with its hiker-only Meadowlark Trail, and the easier Two Brands Trail at Hildebrand Ranch. Chatfield is Colorado Parks & Wildlife: six feet everywhere, including the campground and the 11.5-mile perimeter trail, except inside the Dog Off-Leash Area, which needs a $3 daily or $25 annual pass for one handler and up to three dogs.

Deer Creek Canyon's lot fills before 8 a.m. on weekends with no roadside parking on Grizzly Drive; Hildebrand's lot fills later. Chatfield's two gravel off-leash lots are busy on weekend mornings but the area absorbs it.

The Black Bear Trail linking the two Jeffco parks is closed February 1 to July 31 for wildlife, and Meadowlark and Plymouth Creek have alternating weekday closures for culvert work through November 2026. Two famous no-dog places sit close by: Waterton Canyon, where dogs are banned on the first 6.4 miles of the Colorado Trail, and Roxborough State Park.

Leash rules come from each land manager's published regulations on the date shown on the trail page. Rules change seasonally; check before you go.

Hiking with dogs near Littleton: FAQ

What does the Chatfield off-leash area cost and what are the rules?

A Dog Off-Leash pass is $3 daily or $25 annually, covering one handler and up to three dogs, on top of the $10 to $12 park vehicle pass. Dogs must stay in visual distance under voice control, you carry a leash and bag for each dog, and everywhere else in the park the six-foot leash rule applies.

Can I start the Colorado Trail at Waterton Canyon with my dog?

No. Denver Water does not allow dogs on the first 6.4 miles of the Colorado Trail through Waterton Canyon, leashed or not. The Colorado Trail Foundation points dog owners to the Indian Creek trailhead instead. Nearby Roxborough State Park is also closed to dogs.

Is Deer Creek Canyon open right now?

Mostly. Jefferson County is rebuilding culverts on the Meadowlark and Plymouth Creek trails with alternating weekday closures through November 2026, so one leg of the loop may be shut on a given weekday. The Black Bear Trail to Hildebrand Ranch closes every year from February 1 to July 31.
