The Sanitas loop is Boulder's stair-master: a steep, rocky 1.25-mile ridge climb with 1,300 feet of gain, then a gentle return down the wide Sanitas Valley road. It is one of the most dog-dense trails in the state, which cuts both ways. Tagged Voice & Sight dogs can be off leash on most of the loop, but the neighborhood ends require a leash, and the newer Lion's Lair route up the north side is strictly no dogs. There is no water and little shade on the ridge; carry plenty in summer. Rattlesnakes sun on the lower rocks. Best for fit, sure-footed dogs that already have reliable recall around other dogs.
