Horsetooth Rock is Fort Collins' signature hike and a reliable dog outing if your dog can handle 1,400 feet of gain and a short rock scramble at the top (many owners stop at the saddle below the final blocks). The 5-mile loop climbs service road and singletrack through mountain shrub and ponderosa with views over the reservoir and out to the plains. Larimer County is leash-only and rangers patrol. The lot is the crux: it fills early every weekend. Combine with the Horsetooth Falls spur for water in spring. Rattlesnakes and summer heat are the main hazards; there is little shade above the first mile.
