The Devil's Backbone is a sandstone fin west of Loveland and the 2.4-mile Wild Loop at its base is an easy, scenic dog walk with the Keyhole window as the payoff. It is wide open with no shade and no water, which is why Larimer County flat-out tells you not to bring pets in hot weather; the trail cooks by 10 a.m. in summer. Dogs are leash-only here and banned from the Rimrock Trail higher on the ridge, so do not continue past the Wild Loop junction with your dog. Rattlesnakes are common. Best as a cool-season or dawn hike for dogs that like big sky.
