The paved loop through the heart of Garden of the Gods puts you and your dog at the base of the tallest red fins with almost no climbing. It is wide, stroller-friendly and very busy, so this is a leash-manners walk rather than a workout. Early morning gives you long shadows on the rock and far fewer people. Shade is limited to the north side of the formations; sandstone radiates heat by noon in summer. The park's six-foot leash rule is enforced and the Visitor & Nature Center even allows well-behaved dogs inside (except the dining area). Extend it on the Gateway Trail from the overflow lot for a 2.5-mile outing.
