Green Mountain is the big grassy lump on Lakewood's western edge, and the 6.6-mile Green Mountain Trail loop around its shoulders is the west metro's default dog workout: steady grades, 900 feet of total gain, and a 360-degree view from the summit road that takes in downtown, Red Rocks and the Divide. There is no shade and no water, so summer means dawn starts. Lakewood is leash-only on all trails; mountain bikers and trail runners are constant, and rattlesnakes are common in the tall grass May through September. Cut it short with the 1.9-mile Hayden Trail from the Utah lot for a quick summit.
