Dog Trainers in Durango
Durango's two listed trainers split cleanly between group-class obedience and private behavior work.
Diane's Clever K9s runs group classes in the Creature Comforts training room on Camino del Rio: puppy, basic obedience, rally and AKC Canine Good Citizen, plus private lessons and board-and-train. The five-week basic obedience class is for dogs five months and older and is not meant for dog- or people-reactive dogs, which the trainer says up front.
For those dogs there is Gentle Canine Dog Training, Amber Pickren's private, force-free practice serving Durango and Bayfield, with clients driving in from Pagosa Springs, Cortez, Telluride and Farmington. She is a CPDT-KA certified trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator who works in your home, around town or at her fenced training yard, specializing in aggression, reactivity, fear and resource guarding.
Durango's rules shape the curriculum: every city trail, including the Animas River Trail and Horse Gulch, requires a six-foot leash under Sec. 4-41, while San Juan National Forest trails just outside town allow voice control. A Durango dog needs both polished leash manners and a recall that holds up against deer and other dogs.
