Colorado regulates kennels under the Pet Animal Care and Facilities Act (PACFA, C.R.S. Title 35, Article 80; rules at 8 CCR 1202-15), run by the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Any business boarding more than three pets at a time for pay needs a Boarding/Training Facility license: a qualifying-education course, a pre-license inspection of the building and records, routine inspections, and renewal every year by March 1.
On our cards, PACFA licensed means we found the business in CDA records or it states its license; it does not mean we inspected the facility. A missing tag is not an accusation: a sitter keeping three or fewer dogs at home is outside the definition, and some were simply unconfirmed when we checked. Ask to see the license, or check CDA's Active Facility List.
Rules effective July 15, 2025 added recordkeeping so that dogs are vaccinated before they mix, so expect to show rabies, DHPP and Bordetella everywhere. Since the 2023 respiratory-illness wave, many Front Range facilities also ask for canine influenza and leptospirosis; the flu series needs a booster, so start it three to four weeks before a stay. See vaccines Colorado kennels require.
Before you book, ask how dogs are grouped and whether group play is required (many kennels require an interview day and spay/neuter for play), who is on site overnight, whether there are webcams, the holiday surcharge (typically $5 to $6 per dog per night) and the deposit terms, commonly half the stay. Published Front Range prices in October 2026 ran roughly $55 to $65 a night for a standard kennel and $80 to $87 for a suite; typical ranges, not quotes. The Denver cost guide breaks them down.

Every card states its dog policy and whether a primary source confirmed it; unconfirmed listings say "call ahead". Businesses marked "Featured" pay a fee for placement. Payment does not affect what a listing says about its dog policy, and we do not rank Featured listings by quality. Add or correct a listing.

That the kennel's license appeared in Colorado Department of Agriculture records or the business states it holds one. PACFA licensing means the facility passed a pre-license inspection and is subject to routine inspections; it is not a quality rating from us. A listing without the tag may be a small in-home sitter under the three-dog threshold or simply unconfirmed.
Rabies, DHPP (distemper/parvo) and Bordetella at nearly every facility. Many Front Range kennels also require canine influenza and recommend leptospirosis, especially since the 2023 respiratory-illness wave; CDA advises yearly respiratory vaccines for dogs in high-social settings. The flu vaccine needs a booster two to four weeks after the first dose, so plan ahead.
Weeks, not days, for Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break along the Front Range, and for ski weekends in Summit County. Holiday nights usually carry a surcharge of a few dollars per dog, often require a non-refundable deposit and may have minimum stays. Facilities that require an interview day need that done before the first booking.
Only if the sitter keeps more than three pets at a time or trains dogs in the owner's absence; below that threshold the PACFA license is not required. That is legal, but it means no state inspection. Ask how many dogs the sitter keeps at once, where the dogs sleep and what their vaccine policy is, exactly as you would with a kennel.
One short form; independent Colorado boarders, daycares, groomers and trainers reply directly.
