Dog-Friendly Hikes near Arvada, CO
Arvada's trails run on two rulebooks, the city's leash-everywhere code and Jefferson County's 10-foot standard, and both lead to water.
Arvada City Code Sec. 14-53 prohibits dogs off leash on any street, park, trail or open space, with West Arvada Dog Park (license required) as the exception. The paved, plowed Ralston Creek Trail is the city's everyday dog route, about 12 miles of creek access and neighbourhood parks from Ralston Central Park (no dogs on the splash pad) to the Blunn Reservoir overlook. The other two are Jefferson County Open Space, where the leash is 10 feet or less with a $75 fine: Van Bibber Creek, a wide crusher-fines path along a wetland that suits reactive dogs, and the Fairmount Trail, three miles of prairie that reaches North Table Mountain without its parking problem.
Parking is easy by foothills standards. The Ralston Central and Ward Road lots are free and rarely full, and the 64th Parkway lot seldom fills. The North Table West Trailhead on Highway 93 is full before 8 a.m. on weekends, which is the argument for walking in from Fairmount.
Van Bibber has periodic detours through 2027 for a trail extension, and the county posts bear advice there because bears follow the creek. Fairmount has no shade or water and is a cool-morning trail.

Hiking with dogs near Arvada: FAQ
Is there anywhere in Arvada to hike off leash?
Not on a trail. Arvada's code requires leashes on all streets, parks, trails and open space, and West Arvada Dog Park on West 64th Parkway is the only in-city off-leash area; a dog license is required to use it. Westminster Hills Off-Leash Area, 420 acres under voice control, lies just over the Westminster line.
What leash length applies on Van Bibber and Fairmount?
Both are Jefferson County Open Space, where regulations define a leash as a strap, cord or chain ten feet or less and require physical control at all times. The fine is $75 for a loose dog and $100 if the dog is also out of sight. Off-leash training is not permitted on county land.
Does the Ralston Creek Trail have water for dogs?
Yes. Ralston Creek runs alongside the route with shallow access in many places, and cottonwoods shade the lower half. The trail is paved and plowed, so it works year-round. Leashes are required the whole way under Arvada's code, and dogs are not allowed on the splash pad at Ralston Central Park.
