The Smelter Mountain Off-Leash Dog Area is the City of Durango's designated park for off-leash dog recreation, a big natural tract at the base of Smelter Mountain beside the Animas River. The city describes open terrain and direct access to nearby trails, with dogs allowed to roam under voice control and owners expected to clean up and follow posted rules. Pedestrian access is a tenth of a mile west of the Highway 160 and 550 junction on the south side of 160, with a small dirt parking lot. It is not a fenced park, so bring a dog with a reliable recall.
