Durango's paved Animas River Trail runs about eight miles through town from north of 32nd Street to Dallabetta Park, and it is the spine of local dog life: river access every few hundred yards, cottonwood shade, and a straight shot to downtown patios. The city's leash law is enforced on it, and rangers treat off-leash dogs as a first-offense citation. Dogs may swim, but watch the current in May and June runoff and the tubers in July. Flat and stroller-friendly, it suits every dog from puppy to senior. Oxbow Preserve at the north end does not allow dogs, so turn around there.
