Horse Gulch is the 1,500-acre open space that starts three blocks from downtown Durango, with 57 miles of trail through pinyon, juniper and meadow. The Telegraph Trail climbs about 2.75 miles and 700 feet from the gulch road to a ridge with views over town and the La Platas; the flatter Meadow Loop off the top of the initial half-mile climb is the easy option. This is mountain-bike country, so keep the leash tight on blind corners. The city enforces its leash law here after years of conflict. No shade and no water: a dawn hike in summer. Note the winter closure on the BLM side.
