Staunton State Park lies off US 285 near Pine, roughly 25 minutes southwest of Evergreen through Conifer, and its 25 walk-in campsites are the closest state-park camping to the Evergreen area. Campers carry gear from the parking lot to the site, which keeps things quiet, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife allows leashed dogs at the sites and on the park's trails under its standard six-foot-leash, never-unattended rule. Sites are $28 a night plus a vehicle pass, reservations are required through cpwshop.com up to six months out, and wood and charcoal fires are prohibited, so bring a propane stove. The park is open all year with limited winter services. Elk Falls and Staunton Rocks are the headline day hikes.
